Frequenly Asked Question

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise and body conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment, flexibility, muscle control and joint health.

The five basic principles of Pilates are as follows: Breathe, Pelvic placement, Ribcage placement, Scapular movement and stabilization, Cervical and neck placement. Using these, Joseph Pilates created a series of exercises across a wide range of equipment which incorporated cables and trolleys to be for fitness and rehabilitation. Different exercises done on different apparatus will benefit different body types and work different muscle groups.

Pilates was designed with rehabilitation in mind, to help people recover from injuries. Doing Pilates regularly will also help prevent injuries, reduce muscle and joint pain, as well as improve day-to-day mobility.

As we help to align your bodily posture, you’ll find you put less pressure on sensitive joints, such as knees and hips. You will also be less prone to strains or injuries. In addition, since Pilates does not just focus on a single part of your body, you will see changes all over.

Pain and bad posture can add to your stress; not only does Pilates diminish those issues, it also works to calm you through mindful breathing.

Both are low-impact exercises which help to build strength, coordination, balance and flexibility, and are meant to increase your physical and mental health.

While Yoga usually uses only bodyweight and a mat, Pilates utilizes external resistance apparatus to target certain muscle groups.

In addition, there are many types of Yoga with different schools of thought, based upon Eastern spirituality. On the other hand, Pilates is generally practiced as a form of rehabilitative exercise.

At Pilates Smith, we believe that Pilates is for everyone and every body.
